Falls Lake Academy Wins Six CCMS Conference Titles; Undefeated Season for Baseball Second Year In a Row
Falls Lake Academy in Creedmoor is the latest school to be accepted into the Central Carolina Middle School (CCMS) Conference; which is comprised of various charter schools across 7 counties, Alamance, Chatham, Durham, Granville, Person, Vance, and Wake. This is FLA's first year playing in the CCMS conference, and these Firebirds have shown that they are indeed a force to be reckoned with. They have won 1/3 of all the titles to be claimed. Falls Lake Academy brought home six middle school conference titles this school year, putting this new Granville County charter school on the map for athletics.
In the fall, the middle school girls’ volleyball team went undefeated, winning the title of CCMS volleyball regular season champions. Then, during the CCMS volleyball tournament, the Firebird ladies squashed Roxboro Community School, bringing home the school's first CCMS conference tournament championship. FLA also received CCMS acknowledgment in the fall season for the number 1 overall runner, Kyle Graham, who represented FLA in the cross country men's division; no title was won.
Next, FLA earned their third conference title win when boys’ basketball claimed the CCMS boys’ basketball regular season championship, winning 15 of 18 games during the winter season.
The FLA Firebirds then went on to earn three more title wins in the spring season. On April 26, FLA's co-ed golf team played in the CCMS golf tournament against all eight conference teams, winning the tournament championship and giving FLA their fourth conference title. This school's winning streak didn't stop there. Falls Lake's unstoppable baseball team then brought home two more conference wins. The FLA middle school baseball team holds an undefeated record for two years straight now, and the way these Firebirds dominate the field at every game won them the title of this year's CCMS baseball regular season champions.
On Tuesday, May 10th FLA played in the finals of the CCMS baseball tournament, and celebrated a close 7-6 win against Roxboro Community School, making that this school's sixth CCMS conference title this year. FLA baseball's undefeated season was tested as RCS gave them quite a run for their money. Collin Johnson, Andrew Watkins, and Konen Pate delivered three base hits in a row in the 1st inning, scoring two runs. In the bottom of the 4th FLA lead with a 4-0 score, but RCS swooped in and stole the lead in the top of the 5th by scoring five runs. The Firebirds put another run on the board in the bottom of 5th to tie it up, and claimed their lead once again in the bottom of 6th with a RBI double by Cameron Sterling. RCS was not going home quietly and came back to score 2 more runs for the lead. Bottom of the 7th, and FLA needed one run to tie, and two to keep their undefeated streak alive. John Dunlow hit a line drive double in the gap to bring Watkins home to tie the game. Chase Edwards then hit the first pitch of his at bat and drove it backside to left field for a walk off game winning base hit! Other game highlights were Sterling’s three outstanding defensive plays at 3rd, and Carter Brogden going 3-3 at the plate. What a game!
Congratulations to all of the Firebird student-athletes on their teamwork, sportsmanship, and dedication this year!
